Caffeine and Health: Clarifying the Controversies
New IFIC Review Offers Insights on Misperceptions, Emerging Science

(Washington, D.C., April 16, 2008) To help answer questions and clarify the science surrounding caffeine, the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation is providing a comprehensive update of the research on caffeine and health.

“Caffeine and Health: Clarifying the Controversies,” clarifies some common misperceptions about caffeine pertaining to dehydration, osteoporosis, miscarriage, heart disease and heartburn, showing that moderate amounts of caffeine do not cause these conditions. The Review also highlights caffeine’s potential to reduce risks of certain types of cancer, atrial fibrillation, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s Disease, cirrhosis of the liver, and chronic liver disease. “The purpose of this Review was to answer as many questions about caffeine and health as possible in a single document,” said Lindsey Monroe, Director of Food Ingredient Communications at IFIC. “We hope the Review is helpful to health professionals, journalists, and anyone who is charged with communicating the latest research on this popular and sometimes controversial food ingredient.”

The IFIC Review: Caffeine and Health: Clarifying the Controversies can be accessed at: http://www.ific.org/publications/reviews/caffeineir.cfm.
